His Grip, Not Yours
“I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.” — Philippians 3:12
There is a subtle temptation in the Christian life to believe that everything depends upon the strength of our grip on Christ. We measure our faith by the consistency of our prayers, the depth of our devotion, or the progress we have made. And when these things falter, we wonder whether we have failed Him.
But the Apostle Paul understood something that changes everything: Our pursuit of Christ begins with His pursuit of us.
Notice the order of Paul's words. He does not press on so that Christ might make him His own. He presses on because Christ has already made him His own.
Grace always comes first.
This is the great freedom of discipleship. We do not pray to earn God's affection. We do not open the Scriptures to secure His approval. We do not serve others to prove ourselves worthy of His love. We do these things because we have already been claimed by the One who loved us and gave Himself for us.
Yet grace is never an invitation to complacency. Paul presses on. He strains forward. He refuses to allow either the failures or the accomplishments of yesterday to distract him from the surpassing worth of knowing Christ today.
And so must we.
Perhaps you have grown comfortable in your faith. Perhaps your past continues to whisper accusations that Christ has already answered at the cross. Perhaps you have simply forgotten what it means to hunger for more of Him.
Today, hear the invitation again: Press on.
Not with the anxious striving of someone desperate to be accepted, but with the joyful determination of someone who already belongs.
The Christian life does not begin with your grip on Jesus, but with His grip on you.
And because He has made you His own, you are free to spend the rest of your life knowing Him more.
For Reflection
Where have you been trying to earn what Christ has already freely given? What might it look like today to pursue Him not out of obligation, but out of love?
A Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, forgive me when I mistake my striving for the source of Your love. Remind me that You have already made me Your own. Free me from the weight of yesterday, awaken in me a fresh hunger to know You, and give me grace to press on toward You today. Amen.
